Who to call
Seven numbers, what each is for, and the register to join before you need it.
- Life in danger, crime in progress, fire
- 999, the emergency number for police, fire, ambulance and coastguard; 112 reaches the same operator.
- A power cut
- 105, free, any time, routes to your electricity network operator wherever you are in Great Britain.
- A smell of gas or a suspected leak
- 0800 111 999, the national gas emergency service, free, any time.
- Flooding: warnings and advice
- 0345 988 1188, Floodline, for England, Wales and Scotland.
- Urgent medical help that is not an emergency
- 111, NHS 111, by phone or online.
- A crime that is not an emergency
- 101, the police non-emergency number.
- Fraud or a cyber crime
- 0300 123 2040, Action Fraud, or report online at actionfraud.police.uk.
Before you need them
If you or someone in your household would need extra help in a power, gas or water cut, because of age, disability, a medical condition or young children, join the Priority Services Register. It is free, one registration reaches your electricity, gas and water companies, and it is how they know to check on you.
Write these numbers down and keep the paper where you can find it in the dark. In a power cut the mobile network may fail and a cordless phone will not work.
Water
There is no single national number for a water supply interruption. Your water company publishes its own emergency line on your bill and on its website, and the Priority Services Register covers water as well as energy.
Where these come from
Each number was read on 29 October 2026 from the official page that publishes it: the Be Ready power cuts page for 105, the national gas emergency service, the GOV.UK flood warnings page for Floodline, and Action Fraud. The monthly check re-reads those pages. If a number on this page is wrong, the contact page says how to tell us.
